Repair Hernia

Surgeries aimed to repair hernia are one of the simplest surgical procedures with a high success rate and favorable outcome. It is one of the most recommended long term relief for the pain and suffering that hernia brings about to those inflicted with the disorder.

In definition, hernia results when due to muscle weakness the tissue beneath the weakened muscle bulges out to an opening that it made. This will then cause a lump or protrusion presented on the location of the hernia. Most of the time, the condition worsens because the suffering individual allows it to happen. Recent developments in the field of medicine gave birth to different surgical interventions with the goal to repair hernia. In case you are not yet aware hernia surgeries are termed medically as herniorrhaphy. There are two techniques to repair hernia: open herniorrhaphy and laparoscopic herniorrhaphy.

Laparoscopic herniorrhaphy is done by creating two small incisions (opening). The first incision is in the abdomen while the second opening is near the hernia location. A remote-controlled surgical instrument is used to repair hernia from the abdomen. This is guided by means of a tiny-lighted scope. The procedure takes only about one to two hours.

Open herniorrhaphy is performed by creating one long opening (incision) over the actual bulge. The surgeon will then remove the bulging sac and sews the torn muscle. A man-made mesh will then be applied to provide strength to the weakened and pressured muscle cavity. This is done for the purpose of strengthening the muscle wall. Just like the previous hernia repair procedure, it will take only one to two hours for the actual procedure.

Just like any other surgical intervention, surgeries aimed to repair hernia also come with risks and the possible development of postoperative complications. There are cases associated with internal bleeding and the possibility of getting infected. Doctors would inform you not to take any aspirin and other medications that can induce blood clot formation.

After the hernia repair procedure, a bandage to prevent it from getting infected will protect the site. A caregiver or a nurse would check the stitches done on the location of the hernia repair, but this won’t take too long because they are preventing the occurrence of infection. You will be advised to take a rest and avoid any activity especially heavy ones within a specific time frame. Do not go beyond the advice of your doctor or you will end up getting complications that should be prevented after a hernia repair.

Hernia repair is not as delicate as it was years ago. There is no need for you to worry a lot once you heard the doctor suggest you need to undergo the procedure. This is better than suffering the complications that may develop later on if you continue to disregard the idea.
